Scientific Abstract

The acheievement motive represents a capacity for responding to encountered difficulties with increased effort aimed at reaping the pleasure that is associated with mastering such difficulties. In many studies, achievement-motivated individuals therefore turn out to have a lower symptom load for affective illnesses than other people. In this project, we collaborate with colleagues from Ruhr University Bochum and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) in elucidating the physiological and endocrine processes involved in achievement-motivated individuals' resilient responses to stressful situations and the association between the achievement motive and depressive symptoms. Our goal is a better understanding of the processes that make achievement-motivated individuals resilient for life's hurdles and setbacks.
