Scientific Abstract

Our current social system is often referred to as a working society. This is based on the assumption that the world of paid employment shaped by the modern capitalistic economic system is a decisive factor in the lives of most people living in this society and that it has a decisive influence on their thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. Psychology and related sciences such as sociology or ethnology have produced numerous theories and studies that provide answers to the question of which meaning work has in people's lives. The funding by the Virtual University of Bavaria (Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern, vhb) has made it possible to provide a comprehensive overview of the main approaches and findings of this research. In 14 units, topics such as work as a calling, psychological consequences of too much work, psychological consequences of too little work or career choice are presented. Interviews with people directly affected, experts, and researchers and numerous exercises complement the course. This course can be used as a virtual course by students as well as a training course by professionals.
