Digitale Medien bieten
Digital media offer great opportunities in studies and the working world, e.g. faster exchange of information, more effective work organisation and a better balance between work and leisure. At the same time, digitization and changes in communication and usage behavior present students with new challenges: Constant availability, the pressure to process incoming messages as quickly as possible, an increasing amount of information with sometimes low information quality, a lack of controllability or even an excess of (social) control can trigger stress. This "digital stress" has been shown to affect well-being (Misra & Stokols, 2011), individual performance and work efficiency (Junco & Cotten, 2012) and social relationships (e.g. Chesley, 2005).
Since studying basically represents a period of increased stress (Heublein, Schmelzer & Sommer, 2008) and the introduction of new media into private and university life generates additional burdens, it is of great importance to practice efficient stress prevention. In concrete terms, this means learning how to use digital technology well at an early stage, then making optimum use of the advantages of digital technology and at the same time reducing possible negative effects. Ideally, this can be achieved through stress management training geared towards behavioural change and so-called cognitive micro-interventions (cf. meta-analyses on the topic: Van der Klink, Blonk, Schene & Van Dijk, 2001; Richardson & Rothstein, 2008), which increase self-efficacy in dealing with digital technologies and help students to change their individual self-management in dealing with media (Ebner, Schulte, Soucek & Kauffeld, 2017).
The project seminar for the practice-oriented teaching of moderation and evaluation skills by means of a training course on coping with digital stress, funded by the Innovation Fund for Teaching in the funding period winter semester 2017/18 - summer semester 2018, was intended to strengthen the aforementioned stress coping skills of students. In addition, the project seminar, which was designed as a train the trainer, enabled students to acquire key qualifications for the design, implementation and evaluation of company training courses.
