Short description

Analyses were carried out on the quality of job references and their interpretation. There is less agreement in the interpretation of job reference formulations as grades among untrained practitioners who are experienced in dealing with job references than among student assessors who have been trained in the language of references. The good to very good interraterreliabilities that can be achieved by trained assessors show that persons who read and interpret job references in the context of personnel selection should be trained in the language of the report. The use of job references in applicant preselection can therefore be recommended in principle. However, there is still room for improvement with regard to the knowledge of the language of references and the procedure for analyzing references among practitioners.

Scientific Abstract

Analyses were carried out on the quality of job references and their interpretation. There is less agreement in the interpretation of job reference formulations as grades among untrained practitioners who are experienced in dealing with job references than among student assessors who have been trained in the language of references. The good to very good interraterreliabilities that can be achieved by trained assessors show that persons who read and interpret job references in the context of personnel selection should be trained in the language of the report. If there is no possibility of participating in appropriate training, at least the four-eye principle, that is, the assessment by two appraisers, is recommended, since the validation results show that HR experts can also achieve low to moderate correlations with several performance criteria if the mean grades in the references of two appraisers are used as a predictor.
