In a quantitative study, three groups of atypically employed persons were compared with permanent employees with regard to stress indicators. It was shown that temporary work in particular is associated with a great many specific burdens such as high financial instability, limited opportunities for professional development, a lower level of identification with the profession and with the company (in this case the temporary employment agency). In addition, temporary employees have less influence on the timing, location and content of their work. Freelancers have the greatest freedom of action, even greater than permanent employees. However, they also experience the greatest financial instability, followed by temporary employees. Temporary employees resembled permanent employees the most in their profile, although they show less identification with the organisation.
In a research project conducted by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA), specific stressors associated with different atypical employment relationships were identified. Stress is caused by the employment constellation itself in contrast to stress directly affecting employees at the workplace. In a quantitative study (N = 395), three groups of atypical employees were compared with permanent employees with regard to these stress indicators. It was shown that temporary work in particular is associated with a great many specific burdens such as high financial instability, limited opportunities for professional development, a lower level of identification with the profession and with the company (in this case the temporary employment agency).
