The starting point of the Take Care! project is the integration of physical activity-related health competence (PAHCO) into the curriculum of the Bavarian nursing education. This results in the following question: How is it possible to permanently implement the curriculum content ‘PAHCO’ in school practice and promote PAHCO and an physically active lifestyle among nursing students? In this context, the TakeCare! project aims to identify an evidence-based approach for the dissemination of health-orientated physical activity promotion in Bavarian nursing education.
TakeCare! Module 1 (2022-2024) pursued the sub-goals of a) promoting a competence-oriented use of physical activity and b) implementing interventions to realise the curriculum content ‘PAHCO’. In order to test various interventions for the implementation of the ‘PAHCO' curriculum content with regard to their short-term effectiveness and implementation, 16 Bavarian nursing schools were recruited and randomly assigned to four study arms (i.e. three intervention groups and one control group). Building on this, the TakeCare! Module 2 aims to A) identify the most suitable approach for implementing the curriculum content ‘PAHCO’ and B) develop a systematic dissemination strategy for implementing the curriculum content throughout Bavaria.
Thus, the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of the various interventions will be analysed in Take Care! Module 2 in order to identify the most suitable approach for implementing the ‘PAHCO’ curriculum content. The effects of the interventions developed and initiated in TakeCare! Module 1 on nursing students' physical activity and PAHCO will be determined using questionnaires. The maintenance of structural changes in the schools and the transferability to new cohorts of nursing students will be examined using interviews and questionnaires.
Based on the results of TakeCare! Module 1 and TakeCare! Module 2, a dissemination strategy will be developed together with experts and political stakeholders in the care sector. Finally, the development and publication of a guideline for Bavarian nursing schools on how to implement the curriculum content ‘BGK’ is intended.
The project will produce innovative and practical recommendations for implementing the ‘PAHCO’ curriculum content at Bavarian nursing schools. These recommendations in the form of a guideline will contribute to promoting PAHCO and thus a healthy, physically active lifestyle for all future nursing students in Bavaria. This makes an essential contribution to raising health awareness at an early stage and maintaining the ability of future nursing staff to work, with particular attention being paid to the specific health needs of women. In addition, nurses can play an important role in communicating physical activity and health-related topics to those in need of care and thus make a significant contribution to health promotion and prevention in the population.
