Scientific Abstract

The aim of the present project is to research measures to support wastewater treatment plants on their way to energy neutrality, while at the same time contributing to the supply of renewable gases. This is to be achieved through an intelligent, deeply integrated interconnection of wastewater treatment plant components and processes with a methanation unit. The aim is to implement a fundamental model to describe wastewater treatment plants and to conduct further experimental research on direct catalytic methanation. In this way, it will be possible to ensure the heat and power supply for the wastewater treatment plant in the sense of an energy-neutral mode of operation, while at the same time utilising the great potential of wastewater treatment plants for biomethane production. In addition to its high potential impact due to the large number of existing wastewater treatment plants, the technological approach proposed here is characterised above all by the fact that its modular nature means that it can be available for a wide range of wastewater treatment plants at short notice and can therefore quickly take effect.
