Ultrafast excited-state dynamics in indigo-based photochromic compounds was studied with the transient absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. We demonstrate an approach for adjusting excited state relaxation routesand photoisomerization rates for applications where fast photoswitching is needed.
