Abstract

The paediatrician should be able to distinguish the causes of tall stature and to differentiate the normal variants from the pathological forms. Any kind of uncertainty during diagnosis should be clarified with the assistance of a paediatric endocrinologist. During treatment of children with overgrowth syndromes, a close cooperation with other special disciplines (e. g. human genetics, neuropaediatrics, and paediatric oncology) is necessary. A medical therapy is generally possible. The better acceptance of tall people in today's society has changed the indication for the treatment. Due to reports on fertility problems in tall girls after treatment, this therapy is no longer recommended. The method of bilateral percutaneous epiphysiodesis around the knee could be a surgical alternative.
