The article examines how transnational families dealt with the issues of distance and belonging. From the late 19th century onwards, the Thyssen family, wealthy industrialists, married and moved across national boundaries. Those dynamics affected and shaped their sense of ethnic and/or national belonging as well as their family and kinship relations deeply. By analyzing those dynamics, the study contributes to understand how interpersonal closeness and distance were generated, while at the same time offering insight into the categorical framework underlying this process.
