Abstract

The chapter aims to give an overview of the purposes and standards of evaluating principals and of different evaluation systems worldwide and summarises research results regarding forms and effects of evaluation. The overview shows that while principal evaluation has different purposes and consequences for those evaluated, the contents that are being evaluated as well as the data sources used are quite comparable. Research on the effects of principal evaluation shows that principals prefer methods that are more usable for their own professional growth. Research on the tangible effects of evaluation on the practice and outcome of leadership, however, is scarce.
