Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide. In addition, congenital heart disease is the most common congenital disability, affecting almost 1% of newborns. The primary cause of most heart diseases is the irreversible loss of heart muscle cells, the cardiomyocytes. Thus developing novel strategies to prevent, reduce, or reverse cardiomyocyte loss is critically important. One promising strategy to reverse cardiomyocyte loss is cardiac tissue engineering (CTE). This chapter reviews the advances in CTE, the special requirements for heart repair, and the remaining challenges. Subsequently, the suitability of silk for CTE is discussed.
