Abstract

The chapter examines various grounds of discrimination, namely sex (including the emerging issues of sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, nationality, religion, race and ethnic origin, and age. Furthermore, different grounds of discrimination are not afforded equal attention, with the most in-depth treatment being accorded to sex, disability, and nationality discrimination. The discussion will largely focus on U.S. and German anti-discrimination law and policy, equality law in Germany, as in all European Union countries, is chiefly of EU origin. The chapter concludes with an evaluative summary of the existing protective framework
