Abstract

This article examines the frequency, types and linguistic ideologies of dialect exercises in 72 German grammar-school textbooks from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, introduced with the LehrplanPLUS (2017) and the new Bildungsplan (2016). Bavaria’s textbooks predominantly represent the ideologies of vernacularism and patriotism. While there is a dialect-friendly attitude, the Bavarian variety clearly dominates. The dialect exercises of Baden-Württemberg’s textbooks, in contrast, take a broader perspective on dialects outside this federal state, which leads to a more pluralistic view. However, they often perpetuate the ideologies of standardism and homogenism, including the stereotyping and discrimination of dialect speakers.
