Abstract

Introduction: Given the importance of culturally sensitive psychotherapy, it is necessary to determine how to promote training in transcultural competence. Transcultural competence consists of several dimensions (skills, knowledge, awareness, therapeutic relationship) that are interrelated, but it is currently unknown how their interrelations facilitate transcultural competence.

Methods: We analyzed data from a randomized controlled trial of a web-based training in transcultural competence for clinical psychologists (N = 335). Using network intervention analysis (NIA), we examined the interplay between these dimensions and the effect of training on these dimensions. The network included subscales of the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (skills, knowledge, awareness, therapeutic relationship) and training allocation (training vs. waitlist) as a node, estimated at pre-training, post-training, and two-month follow-up.

Results: The training only had a direct effect on participants' knowledge, both at post-training and follow-up. In terms of the interplay between the dimensions of transcultural competence, knowledge had the highest strength centrality, showing the greatest connectivity with the other dimensions in the network. Participants' skills were associated with a stronger therapeutic relationship at post-training and at follow-up.

Conclusion: NIA provided fine-grained insights into the effect of training. The results of this study suggest that effective training should be multidimensional, addressing each dimension of transcultural competence.
