Abstract

During the so-called Aktion T4, the first phase of the Nazi murder of patients in psychiatric hospitals and nursing homes, 905 patients were removed from the psychiatric hospital (Heil- und Pflegeanstalt) to specially set up killing centers, where they were ultimately murdered. It is estimated that at least 700 handicapped and mentally ill people - including children - died in the institution itself from systematic malnutrition (Hungerkost, a starvation diet lacking nutrients). Many others died from deficiency illnesses due to lack of proper care and neglect. This article outlines the results of the project Nazi Euthanasia in Franconia, a collaboration between the Institute for History of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Erlangen City Archives. First, the events of the so-called Aktion T4 and the starvation deaths are described. Following this, the regional Aufarbeitung (coming to terms) with the historical events that began in 1945 is discussed. Finally, the concepts and goals for Erlangen's planned memorial site are presented. The article makes clear the particularities associated with the Aufarbeitung of the Nazi patient murders in Erlangen, as the relationship between the city, the university clinic, and the university to the HPA was both locally and structurally close. The extensive holdings of patient files of the HPA Erlangen and many other relevant files of varying provenance served as sources. This article emphasizes the high value of scientific research for culture(s) of remembrance.
