Abstract

The aim of the work was the development of a control system for the process-optimized tracking of the focus position during laser beam welding and the verification of the functionality on a commercial laser system. With the optomechanical component used, the adaptive optics, it was possible for the first time to bring about highly dynamic changes in the focus position axially to the workpiece surface, to establish the correlation with the plasma signal and to derive an innovative control strategy. For the control concept, the laser-induced plasma is recorded using plasma diagnostics, used as a measurement variable and processed in a digital signal processor system in order to calculate the control variable “focus position” for actuating the actuator. The strong plasma fluctuations and the complex influence of the process parameters on the plasma signal during laser beam welding make it necessary to use a new control principle, which allows a reliable extraction of the focus position. This control principle is based on an on-line focus position detection developed in the context of this thesis, which ensures process control by the high dynamics of the actuator and the evaluation of the modulation in the plasma signal.
