Abstract

Compressor stations are essential in the transportation of gas through pipeline systems, ensuring that pressure levels remain within operational bounds over long distances. In this contribution, we analyze the optimal placement and number of compressor stations on gas pipeline networks. An optimization framework is introduced to determine the number and location of compressor stations that minimize the control cost. Existence results for optimal solutions are provided, the non-uniqueness of solutions is discussed, and numerical examples are presented.
