Safe and clean drinking water is a basic necessity for life on earth. Rapid industrialization and modernization have polluted water with toxic pollutants such as carcinogenic dyes, heavy metals, chlorinated organic compounds, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and inorganic salts as a result of anthropogenic activities. This chapter provides a comprehensive description of wastewater treatment using alginate-titania composites. This chapter covers two main wastewater treatment methods, i.e., adsorption and photocatalysis by alginate-TiO 2 composites, and their pollutant removal properties. In addition, a thorough discussion of the potential of different forms of alginate-titania composites such as beads, hydrogels, aerogels, membranes, and coatings for the removal of pollutants including heavy metals, pharmaceutical contaminants, dyes, organic compounds, or microbes is also discussed. The limitations, possible solutions to the challenges, and the future of alginate-TiO 2 composites in wastewater treatment are also covered. The studies to date indicate that high production costs, leaching of nanofillers, reusability, recyclability, and large-scale implementation of alginate-titania adsorbents still need to be addressed.
