Abstract

This paper demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of enhancing variable shunt reactors (VSRs) with on-load tap-changers (OLTCs) by implementing power electronic fast-switching modules (FSMs). For this purpose, an OLTC deadband control is extended by a novel voltage control that enables tap changes within a cycle and has the unique ability to skip taps within a defined range, providing a valuable contribution to dynamic voltage support. Dynamic voltage support is illustrated in a case study of an offshore wind farm connected to the mainland via a long AC submarine cable. A fast response voltage drop indicates that the VSR with OLTC and FSM is an affordable alternative and complement to static var compensators (SVCs) and static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) in case of wind turbine outages and resulting High Voltage Ride Through (HVRT). Based on historical measurement data and a fluctuating voltage profile, the FSM performance is evaluated for strong and weak grid scenarios. The results highlight the reduction in mechanical switching and improved reactive power compensation accuracy. Furthermore, the results suggest that FSM-equipped VSRs are beneficial for converter-dominated power systems, increasing the reliability and reducing the maintenance frequency of VSRs.
