According to the German Pregnancy Conflict Act if an important illness or malformation is suspected in an unborn child, the pregnant woman should receive counselling from physicians “who have experience with this health condition in children who have been born.” This article examines the background and objectives of interdisciplinary counselling provided by pediatricians to pregnant women or expectant parents and illustrates its necessity using examples, such as chromosomal abnormalities, multiple pregnancies, health issues with prenatal treatment options or rare diseases. Drawing on experiences at the University Perinatal Center Franconia, the discussion focuses on the content and structure of the counselling process, which is intended to help parents get a better idea of what their child’s life will be like after birth and make well-considered, responsible decisions.
